The 1999-2000 season was Aky's first season competing in IWPA sanctioned
    weight pulling events. He really enjoys the activity as well as the new doggie
    friends he's made.  Aky weighs an average of 75 lbs.; so he competes in the
    60-80 lb. class.  This means he is usually competing against Malamutes,
    Rottweilers, Bulldogs, Pit Bulls, and some Mixed Breeds.  Aky competes against
    the other dogs to earn points and for himself to earn titles.  Points are
    accumulated throughout the season and the top 3 dogs in each class and region
    will receive a gold, silver, or bronze medal and will be invited to the international
    championship pull.  Three titles are offered: The Working Dog (WD) in which the
    dog pulls 12 times their weight  (5 times if pulling on snow) at 4 different
    events; Working Dog Excellent (WDX) in which the dog pulls 18 times their
    weight (10 times if on snow) at 4 different events; and Working Dog Superior
    (WDS) in which the dog pulls 23 times their weight (15 times if on snow) at 3
    different events.

    Aky earned his Working Dog Superior title on wheels and has 2 legs towards
    his WDS on snow. He earned the gold medal for his region on snow and the
    silver on wheels. Aky was invited to attend the IWPA championships this year
    in Levenworth, WA.  He was the only German Shepherd Dog competing and sure
    made us all proud when he pulled a personal best on wheels and brought home the
    bronze medal for his weight class on snow.

The picture to the left is Eddie.  He's one of Aky's pullin' buddies.  He's taught Aky a lot about pullin'  and havin' fun on road trips;  he even taught Aky to sit in his own chair so he could keep his paws  warm between pulls.

IWPA Championship 2000

On April 29 & 30 dogs and handlers from all across the United States and Canada came to Leavenworth Washington to attend the International Weight Pull Championships.  The weather was beautiful, the
competition was tough, the people were wonderful and the dogs were amazing!

Saturday was the snow competition; and while the sunny blue skies were perfect for getting a sunburn they made the pulling conditions very hard for the dogs.  To say the snow was sticky would be an understatement and when we watched how it took five men to pull the sled back to the starting line we really appreciated the physical and mental abilities of the dogs.  Below are the results of the 80 pound class; the other classes can be seen on the IWPA web page.  Aky pulled like a pro, bringing home the bronze medal and proving that you don't have to be a Sled Dog to excel at the sport of weight pulling !

             was left & it had some dirt content. It was placed in a wooden frame on the concrete slab
             remaining from an old packing house.

On Sunday everyone was ready for the wheels competition.  The conditions were perfect for both handlers and dogs.  The pulling chute was carpet on an almost level concrete pad and many records
were set that day.  Aky pulled a personal best of 2,190 pounds.  He actually pulled 2, 540 pounds
but due to a handler error he was disqualified at that weight.  The dogs who won their classes truely
are champions. The dogs who didn't win that day are champions too.
